The old trail known as S&M split into two sections. One was maintained as part of Log Road, but the other had to be closed permanently.

The first step is to completely break up and loosen the old trail. Even with the sandy loam at Mansfield compaction from riding makes it difficult for new vegetation to re-establish itself.

After this was done, young trees and groundcover plants were transplanted onto the old trail, and forest duff was scattered everywhere. It not only disguises the old trail, but as this material decays it adds nutrients to the soil. The last step was to block the trail entrance and exit with old branches. In some spots it is difficult to tell where the trail was.
